Top 5 Important Link Building Mistakes to Avoid in SEO

Link Building is a major side of any website Search Engine Optimization (SEO) drive. There has been a lot which has been discussed about this topic and as is crystal clear from the title of this article, we are going to talk about the things you should not be doing when you are working on a link building campaign.

There are many of you who try and increase the backlinks. This is aimed at increasing the SERP of the site, improve SEO and the page rank, but the move may also backfire. A wrong strategy will leave you red faced as it may seriously hamper your site’s search engine rankings. Try and keep in mind the following while you are working on link building.
1. Do not use single anchor text:
In most link building tips, you will always be advised to use anchor text. But it may not be a good idea to start using single anchor text for each link building technique.
The modern search engine algorithms have become much smarter than they were previously. The algorithms will make out that these are not natural links and are manipulated to improve the search engine ranking for a specific keyword. Hence, it is always better to use a set of anchor texts rather than a specific one.
2. Gradually increase the backlinks:
There are many link building companies who run paid services to help increase your links at a pace which is too high. If you are looking to utilize them, be forewarned. Consider this- My company has about a thousand links at the start of a particular month and after I hire a link building company, my company ends up having more than ten thousand links by the end of the same month. Does it look natural?
Well, it does not and as a result, it will definitely not look natural to the search engines. Link building should be a gradual process and should be increased at a rate which is natural. Anything rapid will not work in your favor.
3. Distribute your link across various webpages:
Your link should be distributed across various websites. Do not put all your links or the majority of your links on a single website. Your page ranking is bound to suffer in that case. My colleague had a blog which had a page rank of 3 on Google for a few months after it was launched. It used to be a free blogger hosted one at that time. In an effort to increase the inlinks, he joined a SEO forum and took part actively on the forum. After a few days his links increased, but at the next Google page rank update his blog rank came down to nil. When he tried to assess the problem, he concluded that it happened because more than 95 percent of his links were posted on the same website.
4. Exchange Links at a Natural rate:
Link exchange is another link building technique in which allows two publishers to exchange their links and get a good ranking in return. Excessive link change is not advised as it does not look natural.
If you have a Google directory which happens to be lake an open directory with pagerank, and the Yahoo directory, you will be able to observe that both these search engines link to each other at a level.
You can definitely exchange the link but it should be at an optimum rate. Exchanging your links to sites which have their links on your website, it is bound to cause problems.
5. Post your links on quality websites:
You should post a link at a good quality website which has a good page ranking on Google than post hundreds of links on a poor website which has a bad pagerank. Use interesting methods like guest posting etc to increase traffic and the quality of your link at the same time. It is always wise to invest your time on good quality permanent links which will get you the desired results than wasting it on low links.
